New scholarship group targeting Hispanic students.

Central Texas organizations unite to improve educational resources.

AUSTIN, TX (February 16, 2005) — A new alliance of non-profit and community-based organizations throughout Central Texas has been formed to increase enrollment of area Hispanic students in higher education.  The Hispanic Scholarship Consortium (HSC) will address the need to identify, collect, consolidate and maximize educational financial resources for the region’s Hispanic student population.

“With one of every three Texas high school students being Hispanic, it is necessary for our community to ensure adequate educational and financial resources are readily available to our youth,” said David B. Garcia, Ph..D., HSC Founder and President.  “HSC is committed to this task and believes it is equally critical students and their families become aware of and have access to these resources.”

HSC was founded to address the needs of the phenomenal population growth among Hispanics in Texas.  According to HSC staff, the consortium’s objectives are to encourage higher education through endowments and scholarships, support and guide Latino students in the transition from high school to college, collaborate on fund-raising activities, scholarship administration and distribution, and development of future leaders for the Texas Hispanic community.

Through planned HSC programs, members and sponsors can have a positive effect on students’ education and career preparedness and provide educational guidance, mentoring and workforce development opportunities via job placement.

“The future of Texas and our nation is dependent upon the success of our youth. We as a community are responsible for insuring our children have the skills and ability to develop into contributing members of our society — and especially as doctors, lawyers, teachers and other professionals,” said Garcia.  “It is truly inspiring to see existing organizations and institutions across Central Texas unite with the common goal of supporting our students attain dreams of a higher education.”

Hispanic Scholarship Consortium members include: Club Sembradores de Amistad de Austin; El Amistad Club of Round Rock, Texas; Fiesta de Independencia Foundation; Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Education Foundation; Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas; and Southwest Key Program, Inc.

The Hispanic Scholarship Consortium is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, non-profit alliance of organizations whose mission is to increase the enrollment of Central Texas Hispanic students in higher education by providing scholastic services and opportunities.  For membership or sponsorship opportunities, contact HSC at (512) 615-2294.
