“The Aguila Awards Foundation is proud to have such talented individuals represent the Texas Latino community. We feel it is important that we honor these individuals for their contributions to Texas; and essential these successful role models be recognized in their own communities,” said AAF Executive Director Roxana Estrada.
“It is with great admiration and respect that we honor all of this year’s nominees for their demonstrated dedication and passion to their respective professions, while representing the Latino community in such an positive manner,” she added.
This year AAF also presented the “Bronze Screen” Aguila Award to Robert Rodriguez to honor his significant contributions to the film and entertainment industry. The award is presented to individuals for presenting Hispanics in a positive and credible light within the film industry.
Austin’s own Rodriguez began his film career in 1991, when directed his first full-length film, “El Mariachi” in 1992. It was the first U.S. film released in Spanish and one of the lowest budgeted movies ever released by a major studio. Since then, Rodriguez has received numerous awards, honors and recognition from the movie industry. His other films include: “From Dusk Till Dawn,” “The Faculty,” “Desperado,” “Once Upon a Time in Mexico,” and the “Spy Kids” trilogy.
“AAF is pleased with the voting response from the Texas Hispanic community. The Lone Star state displayed a strong sense of community and interest in the 2005 nominees. Their participation reflects the need for the “people’s choice” awards format. Hispanics care about their community and are ready to celebrate each other’s successes,” stated Ms. Estrada.
