Latino music awards program to
recognize artists.

AUSTIN, TX – (June 6, 2005) — Austin, the “Live Music Capital of the World” will be home to the 2005 Premios Música Latina de Austin, a new Spanish-language “People’s Choice” awards program recognizing Austin’s best Latino musical artists. The 2005 nominees will be honored at One World Theatre, July 19, 2005.
The musical showcase will feature Latino music’s celebrities and artists, among them ranchera singer-songwriter Jimena – who will co-host the awards program with Univision Radio KINV-FM morning show host, Raul Brindis and Univision’s “Despierta America” morning show host, Raul Gonzalez. Musical highlights will include performances by Tabu , Jimena, Control, Mariachi Companas de America and Grupo Fantasma.
2005 Premios Música Latina de Austin will invite the Austin Hispanic community to cast votes for their favorite local and regional artists. The ballots can be found in the Austin American Statesman’s Spanish-language weekly newspaper, Ahora Si.
The launch of the 4-week voting process was introduced today during a reception at La Fonda San Miguel Restaurant which featured several of Austin’s top Latino recording artists.
“With Austin being a live music mecca, it's important to recognize the diverse and dynamic artists from various genres enjoyed by the Austin Latino community. The talent that exists within the central Texas Hispanic community is rapidly growing and we are proud to honor these artists. The ballot process will allow Austin Hispanic viewers, listeners and readers a chance to vote for their favorite entertainers,” said selection committee member, Rose Reyes, Music and Film Manager, Austin Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.
Industry professionals from music, media and entertainment selected this year’s musical performers representing 12 music categories – Album of the Year, Best Band, Cumbia, Female Vocalist, Latin Hip Hop/Urbano, Latin Rock, Male Vocalist, Mariachi, New Artist, Norteño, Salsa Merengue, Tejano – and a special Univision Merit Award for artists who have achieved extraordinary successes nationally.
“We are proud to celebrate the creativity these nominees bring to their respective musical genres,” said selection committee member, Jason Najjar, Owner, Club Zocalo. “These artists have dedicated their lives to creating brilliant music and entertaining the Latino community. It is essential that we recognize these individuals for their passion and achievement. This is a unique event and we encourage the Austin community to show its support for this recognition of the area’s musical talent by filling-out the ballots and casting votes.”
Corporations supporting this musical awards program include Ahora Si, Amerigroup, Bud Light, Ford, La Invasora, SBC Communications, Inc., and Univision KAKW 62/Telefutura.
The 2005 Premios Musica Latina de Austin is a Spanish-language “People’s Choice” awards program recognizing Austin’s best Latino musical artists.
