Anheuser-Busch
Foundation grant propels OLLU into second century of educational service.
San Antonio,
TX (October 31, 1996) In Libris Veritas, the capital campaign for
the new library-information technology center at Our Lady of the Lake
University (OLLU), has $150 thousand more in its coffers thanks to a gift
from the Anheuser-Busch Foundation. The contribution will be made in three
equal payments of $50 thousand which OLLU will receive over the next three
years.
"The
gift from the Anheuser-Busch Foundation will help us build a library for
the 21st century. As we face the dawn of a new millennium, the University
will become more dependent than ever on the library and its resources,"
said Sister Elizabeth Anne Sueltenfuss, Ph.D., President of OLLU. "The
new library will serve as an intellectual bridge for students and faculty
to explore existing research data and documents," she added.
In 1994 OLLU
made construction of a new library and technology center a top priority,
as part of its overall strategy to help the University serve its growing
number of students and the San Antonio community. Celebrating 100 years
of serving students with access to higher education, OLLU's student body
of 3,300 is 75% Hispanic.
"Our
Lady of the Lake University has played a significant role in the education
of thousands of Hispanic students and has been a pillar of stability on
the west side of San Antonio for decades," said Jesus Rangel, Vice-president
of Corporate Relations for Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., and a San Antonio
native. "The Board of Trustees of the Anheuser-Busch Foundation is
pleased to play a role in enhancing the University's new library as it
enters its second century of service," he added.
Architectural
plans for the library are finalized and construction will begin in 1997.
The Anheuser Busch Foundation's grant will fund a computer classroom in
the new library and technology center. The classroom will feature "state-of-the-art"
electronic technology in support of and access to resources for teaching,
learning and research.
The 50,000
square-foot library will become a magnet for learning on the east side
of the campus. The new facility will centralize campus library services
and functions in one location to allow access to skill-development programs,
study materials and research equipment. In addition, the library will
offer increased electronic services and provide computer training for
library users. Moreover, the new facility will accomplish an important
social function by serving as an academic and social centerpiece.
Founded in
1895 by the Congregation of Divine Providence, OLLU's history reflects
the University's commitment to all people in the community. The University
boasts of a national reputation for being one of the few programs in the
country focusing on bilingual/bicultural aspects of social work in the
Hispanic community. (Boiler plate on the Foundation).
