News/Noticias Hispanic Scholarship Fund receives donation from Wal-Mart. Panorama City, CA (April 4, 2000) The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) has been selected as a recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Panorama City, CA, Wal-Mart Store. HSF is the premier Hispanic scholarship-granting organization in the United States. The donation was part of Wal-Mart's local outreach efforts to the Panorama City community, which is approximately 47% Latino. The funds were presented to HSF President and Chief Executive Officer, Sara Martinez Tucker, by Wal-Mart Store Manager Bernie Seaman, with the assistance of Assemblyman Tony Cardenas (D-California, 39th District). "We at the local store level recognize more has to be done to help young Latinos complete their higher education," said Wal-Mart Store Manager Bernie Seaman. "The Hispanic population of San Fernando Valley is the largest ethnic segment of our service area and is a resource in which we must invest," he added. "Hispanics account for more than one out of every four new workers entering the U.S. labor force and an educated Latino population is fundamental to the future productivity and growth of the country's economy," said Martinez Tucker. "HSF recognizes and rewards outstanding Latino students pursuing a higher education; donations like this from Wal-Mart is how we have been able to award more than 40,000 scholarships totaling over $47 million in our 24-year history." In recognition of the scholarship donation and other efforts in support of the Latino community, Assemblyman Cardenas presented Wal-Mart with a resolution from the California State Assembly. It cited Wal-Mart's continued commitment and dedication in providing scholarship dollars to HSF and assisting Latinos in their pursuit of higher education. "On behalf of the residents of the area, I would like to extend our gratitude to Wal-Mart for its recognition of the valuable natural resources that Latino youth represent to our community, our state and the nation," said Cardenas. As of January 31, 2000, Wal-Mart operated 1,801 Wal-Mart stores, 721 Supercenters, and 463 Sam's Clubs in the United States. Wal-Mart employs more than 885,000 people in the United States and is the largest employer of Hispanics and African Americans. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. empowers its associates to serve the needs of their communities through its "Good Works" initiative.
