Wal-Mart Stores presents $50,000 to Hispanic education organization Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities.

San Antonio, TX. (October 4, 2000) — Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. presented this week $50,000 to the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). The check was extended to HACU officials in San Antonio, Texas, and will be used to support retail business students at five institutions of higher learning across the nation.

"Wal-Mart is committed to supporting HACU and Hispanic success in higher education," said Robert Nieman, Wal-Mart District Manager. "This donation will allow our company to support a top priority in the Hispanic community-education, and what better way to do this but, support an organization that represents more than 200 colleges and universities," he added.

The funds are made on behalf of nine area Wal-Mart stores, and four SAM's Clubs in San Antonio, and are included in a $130,000. two-year commitment made last year. Five schools will receive $10,000 in 2000, for students majoring in the area of retail business.

"Hispanic students have a true champion on their side in Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., which recognizes the importance of education in the economic success of our community and the nation. Thank you for joining our HACU team to educate the fastest-growing minority population in the United States," said Antonio R. Flores, HACU President and CEO.

HACU will coordinate distribution of scholarships to ensure students enrolled in retail business curricula at the five designated universities will receive Wal-Mart Achiever Scholarships for up to two years. The recipient schools are San Diego State University, California State University-Chico, Texas A&M, University of Arizona and University of Florida, all of which are HACU members. These schools have either a strong retail business curricula or have developed business centers to promote the retail industry.

Wal-Mart is the largest private employer of Hispanics in the United States with more than 74,000. Wal-Mart employs more than 885,000 associates in the US and 255,000 internationally. In 1999, the company raised and contributed more than $163 million for charitable organizations. Wal-Mart is located on-line at www.Wal-Mart.com.

HACU, established in 1986, is an international association of higher education representing more than 200 colleges and universities where Hispanics constitute a minimum of 25 percent of the total enrollment at either the graduate or undergraduate level. HACU also has associate and international members. HACU's mission is to promote the development of member colleges and universities; to improve access to and the quality of post secondary educational opportunities for Hispanic students; and to meet the needs of business, industry, and government through the development and sharing of resources, information, and expertise.
